3 out of 5 stars Way Too Big for Easy Storage   April 4, 2010

I received this new crockpot last week and gave it away the day after. I purchased it based on its positive reviews and my needs for a replacement that had about the same capacity. When the new crockpot arrived, I was surprised at how big the boxes were it came in, but even more surprised by the size of the unit itself. The outside electronic portion is huge! Way bigger than it needs to be to accomodate the inside crock. On top of that, it has handles that stick up several inches above the pan itself. I used it the day it arrived and was satisfied with the settings, the capacity etc but when I went to lift the hot crock out of the base, I found it nearly impossible. The crock barely extends over the sides of the base so there is very little to grab onto when wearing oven mits. The best chance of doing it is at the ends, however, those huge handles get in the way. Afterwards, I looked around my kitchen and tried to find a cupboard that was deep enough and tall enough to store this appliance and figured out that if I found such a space, I would likely need to remove a couple of other things to accomodate it. So, I gave it away and will continue to use my Westbend.

3 out of 5 stars 3-weeks, and it was cooked.   March 28, 2010

When it worked, it worked OK. But mine worked about three weeks, after that, everything appeared normal--the timer, the probe, manual mode, program mode-- except it wouldn't heat up. So when you cook with this cooker, be sure to check at first 20 minutes, otherwise, you risk wasting a good piece of meat. I have to send it back. what a disappointment.

3 out of 5 stars Crock pot   March 24, 2010

I ordered what I thought was a programable crockpot. I wanted one I could preset the time leave for work and have it start at like 10am. I leave very early sometimes and need something like that. I thought I had found it! When I got it I found out it wasn't programable at all. It works and is a very good crockpot, but has very similar settings to my other crockpot. The only thing I wish it didn't say was "Programable Crockpot" because that's what made me think I had found what I was looking for.

3 out of 5 stars Just average... needs modifications and probe is useless   March 15, 2010

I read many reviews before purchasing this crock pot. I am happy with the purchase, and don't plan to return it, but I believe others can benefit from my experience.
What I do like is that the programming is very easy to accomplish and works well, and the entire unit, stoneware, etc. is easy to clean. I also like the 5qt size, most crock pot recipes call for a 4 or 6 qt. crock so this is a good in-between size. I have used the pot at 1/2 to 2/3 full and have not had problems with overcooking items. So, overall, the programming feature works well and the size and conveinience of the crock are great.
However, the probe feature is a total bust. The 3lb pork shoulder I put in was "done" in 1.5 hours according to the probe, which is just ridiculous, becasuse even an oven would not cook it that fast, much less a slow cooker. It was very raw when I checked on it, and had to go back for anoher 3 hours on high to get the nice, soft, fork-separating meat I desired. Overall, 4.5 hours in a slow cooker is FINE by me, I was just bugged that had I not been home to check, the probe would have seriously undercooked my meat. So I can't trust this feature.
Another problem with the probe is that if you read a few good crock pot cookbooks, they do not recommend steam escaping from the crock, and the probe hole is just perfect for steam esacpe. So I have been using a layer of foil over the pot, under the lid, and this works great, but kind of frustrating to have to use foil every time. So in short, the probe feature is kind of useless and I have to adjust the way I use the pot because of this "feature"...if you are deciding between two pots, then go for one without a probe.
Also it is important to note that the lid snaps on quite tight, great for commuting with your crock, but it is a little hard to get the snap on correctly and may be hard for people with older hands or arthritis, etc. Also, you have to snap the crock in to the base, so the WHOLE thing is going to go with you, not just the inner stoneware and lid. Great if you plan on cooking the dish more at your destination, but kind of uneccesary if you just want to keep it warm til you get there. I don't know if that matters to some people, just thought it was good to note.

1 out of 5 stars Used only three times - crock cracked!   February 18, 2010

I bought this slow cooker right before Christmas. It worked perfectly the first time I made Party Potatoes in it using the manual setting. The second time I used it to warm a spiral ham and it got done waaaay before it was supposed to using the probe. By the time I served it, the ham was very dry. The third time I used it for a roast, the meat was done early but was very tasty and moist. I removed the roast, wrapped it in foil and proceeded to add thickening to make gravy. While I was stirring the meat juices and waiting for the gravy to thicken, I heard a snap. Sure enough, the crock just cracked up the side. If I had paid $20 for a Slow Cooker, I could maybe understand it, but I paid over $50 for this. To use it only three times before it breaks is very upsetting. I will probably never buy a Hamilton-Beach appliance again.
